The incumbent functions directly to support the activities of SCI/RCF in collaboration with the hospital accreditation and quality department. The RN is responsible for planning, integrating, implementing, modifying, and evaluating the effectiveness of the Veteran's care. The SCI Quality Improvement Registered Nurse's foundational elements will serve to support delivery of high quality, timely care to the Veteran receiving services. This RN is the lead of the integrated quality care team established by SCI. He/she is responsible for providing clinical leadership and expertise on SCI quality processes and regulations. He/she possesses the knowledge related to VHA guidelines, utilization review criteria, current evidence-based standards of care, compliance guidelines and local policy. Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in unit/program level quality improvement processes and initiatives as well as customer service programs. The incumbent serves as a specialist within the Accreditation and Quality Management Programs with SCI, RCF, SCI Outpatient Clinic, SCI HBPC, SCI Hub and Spoke Programs. Incumbent tracks, analyzes, and trends regulatory action plans and monitors for sustainment of improvement. May participate in root cause analysis, peer review, Lean Six Sigma teams, and employee works in collaboration with the Patient Safety, HRO, Innovation, Systems Redesign, Risk Management, Infection Control and Utilization Management teams for tracers, chart reviews and QI initiatives.
- Review SCI JPRS/DBRS patterns and trends with unit leaders for appropriate intervention initiation, identify adverse events and complete investigations.
- Chair various SCI multi-disciplinary and process improvement meetings to review and ensure quality for areas such as pain, psychotropics, weekly IDT meeting for review for falls, and alarms as well as appropriateness of interventions.
- Chair/co-chair and facilitate monthly SCI PI meetings, prepare meeting minutes, and report to the hospital quality board or designated committee. Participate in multiple facility wide committees representing SCI.
- Owner of several SCI policies/SOPs, and responsible for ensuring all SCI nursing policies/SOPS are reviewed for accuracy.
- Serves as an active CARF committee member responsible for supporting the accreditation process, action planning, and survey data reports.
- Assists the SCI teams with building/updating EMHR templates to meet and maintain regulatory compliance (LTC, VHA, TJC, CARF).
- Lead SCI initiation of new requirements and facilitate integration into unit flow.
- Complete timelines for adverse events as necessary.
- Owner to many action VISN action items such as TJC accreditation survey, CARF, LTC survey preparation.
- Collaborate with SCI educator to complete orientation with all new staff and educating on QI survey process; Provide orientation to the providers and interdisciplinary staff regarding quality improvement (QI).
- Collaborate with SCI educator to ensure quality and education needs of Spoke sites are met.
- Lead QI/Survey education at Skills Fairs or through other channels.
- Provides and/or facilitates education to SCI staff regarding relevant PI, clinical, and regulatory issues; Functions as a resource/consultant to SCI staff regarding PI, clinical, regulatory educational and/or training needs.
