This position reports to the Deputy Associate Administrator, Moon to Mars Program. The Director Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate Safety and Mission Assurance Office:

  • Provides safety and mission assurance (SMA) leadership and integration for Moon to Mars programs (Orion, Space Launch System, Exploration Ground Systems, Human Landing System, Gateway, and Extravehicular Activity/ Human Surface Mobility) to support the achievement of National and Agency goals and objectives.
  • Assesses the significance, technical quality, and effectiveness of SMA data and information presented at major program reviews held by or for the Moon to Mars Program Office, including those performed in support of the NASA Program Management Council.
  • Formulates the resources required for the integrated SMA function through Agency Planning, Programming, Budgeting, and Execution processes and manages the Moon to Mars SMA resources. Oversees the development and execution of schedules for integrated SMA products across the Moon to Mars programs.
  • Supervises matrixed personnel to develop integrated products and SMA assessments. Appoints teams as needed to develop integrated mission products.
  • Ensures Moon to Mars program development and mission operations efforts are being conducted on a sound engineering basis and incorporate integrated risk management practices. Interfaces with other NASA technical authorities, mission development managers, offices, programs, and Centers to coordinate SMA engagement in program development and mission operations.
  • As required by Agency policies, maintains cognizance of requirements and standards that have a direct impact on the safe and reliable development and operation of systems and ensures that programs' development and mission operations efforts are being planned and conducted with the proper focus on safety and mission success.
