- Performs a broad range of sensitive activities related to the day-to-day management, including working with the executive leadership, their directors, and other senior managers across all USDA mission areas.
- Translates goals of the Under Secretary into effective development and implementation of agency policies and programs.
- Evaluates policy recommendations presented by operating officials within the mission area, identifies policy options.
- Serves as a point of contact and spokesperson on complex policy and strategic matters, with responsibility to ensure proper and timely attention is devoted to high level, high priority, urgent, and controversial issues, problems, or situations.
- Represents the Under Secretary at various meetings and conferences with officials of the Department, other government agencies, foreign visitors, and private groups and individuals.
- Leads strategic initiatives to address operational challenges and opportunities.
- Manages the day-to-day operations of the Office of the Under Secretary, including strategic management of the Under Secretary’s staff and the Under Secretary’s time.
- Performs special studies and projects related to mission area programs and operations.
- Advises the Under Secretary of findings, identifies problems or issues requiring corrective action, and recommends appropriate changes.
- Directly supervises staff in the Office of the Under Secretary and provides both administrative and technical guidance in support of program requirements and goals.
