This Maintenance Mechanic position is assigned to the Facilities Division of Big Bend National Park and directly reports to the Supervisor of Rio Grande Village. Most of the time for this position will be spent maintaining utility systems, housing units and other facilities buildings in Rio Grande Village. This position will respond to work request performing maintenance operations and repairs. The incumbent will be responsible for grounds keeping, irrigating, and mowing. This position will help maintain comfort stations, vault toilets, and may have regular custodial duties.
The incumbent will make repairs to housing and building interiors and exteriors, which may include roofing, painting, carpentry, electrical, masonry and plumbing work. This position will also maintain landscapes and yards. Will work from oral and written instructions, work orders, building and/or utility plans, blueprints, and sketches to complete installations, modifications, and repairs independently and assist others.
Operates motor vehicles and performs pre-vehicle operation inspection such as fluid levels, lights, brakes, and operational procedures, greasing moving parts, changing oil, fuel and air filters, cleaning and washing vehicles, and minor parts changing repairs. Operating various pieces of equipment such as skid steer loaders, front end loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, chippers, and chainsaws. The incumbent will be exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors. Will be exposed to heat, biting insects, dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with hazardous chemicals and around moving equipment, paints, solvents, etc.
Area Information:
Big Bend National Park encompasses 801,000 acres of the Chihuahuan Desert with more biodiversity than almost any other national park and a dark sky designation. Elevation in the park varies from 7825 to 1850 ft. The climate is generally pleasant with hot summers (90-110+ degrees F.) and mild winters (30-50 degrees F.). Recreational opportunities include hiking, bird watching, photography, backcountry camping, bicycling, and river rafting. The park has a post office, gas stations, camper stores, restaurant, library, gym, and lodge.
The gateway town of Terlingua has lodging, restaurants, hardware store, small grocery and gift stores, churches and a bank. Lajitas has limited shopping, lodging, restaurants, golf course and churches. Alpine, Texas (100 miles from PJ) has most necessities, including supermarkets, variety of stores, a hospital, pharmacies, churches, a movie theater, and a university. The nearest larger cities are Midland/Odessa (225 miles) and El Paso (325 miles).
Daycare, Schools and Community:
There are 250 people in the park community including NPS, Concession, Border Patrol, Postal Service, and School staff, and their families in 5 housing areas. San Vicente public school (SVISD) (www.svisd.com) is a state-accredited elementary (Pk-8) located at Panther Junction. The daycare program is currently free, subject to change (contact Dr. Jessi Milam at 432-244-3131 or jmilam@svisd.com for more information). SVISD has a 3:1 student to teacher ratio and is an "A" rated academic curriculum with a variety of extracurricular activities including archery, STEM, gifted & talented, summer programs, and a computer lab. Terlingua has a state-accredited high school (no bus service).

The position leads efforts of three inventory and monitoring networks, and the subject matter experts associated with those programs. The position works with partners including the national inventory and monitoring program, other federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, and universities in an effort to better understand and adaptively manage ecological, and biophysical resources in context to park management needs. Conducts cross program coordination and science communication. The incumbent is responsible for inventory and monitoring, natural resource program management and operational responsibilities assigned by the Natural Resources Associate Regional Director and coordinating with Inventory and Monitoring Networks, the national Inventory and Monitoring Division, universities, non-governmental agencies, Superintendents, and Park Managers, for integrated natural resource support of the Region and its parks. The incumbent's major duties include development of status and trend reports, technical analysis of study results and research, educational and technical assistance programs based on interdisciplinary, multi-scale, systems-oriented approaches to engage and benefit parks and park management decisions.
The incumbent must report to work in one of the offices and locations listed below. The position is Telework Eligible, but this position is not considered a REMOTE duty station, working from home on a full-time basis. The duty stations for these positions are Negotiable After Selection. The incumbent may negotiate their duty station from any the following locations:

Collects fees and operates a busy visitor center or information station to provide visitor information and orientation to the park. Conducts compliance checks of park users to ensure proper payment of fees. Prepares remittance reports and deposits. The Supervisory Resources Program Manager for Apostle Islands National Lakeshore leads a dynamic and hands-on program of interdisciplinary natural and cultural resource management. The park includes a small mainland unit and 21 islands spread out over an area of Lake Superior the size of Rocky Mountain National. The only access to the islands is by boat.

The incumbent will serve as a technical advisor on the development and implementation of a science-based management program for physical science resources such as air quality, water quality and quantity, snowpack, hydrology, caves and karst formations, acoustics, geology, soils, hydrogeology, paleontology, and related fields and activities.
