The postdoc will join a cosmology team based at JPL in its continued effort to better understand the distribution of galactic dust on large scales. The selected candidate will focus on exploring further the connection between dust and gas, as traced for example by HI, HII, and other astronomical observations. The position will involve but is not limited to developing novel data analysis techniques and physically motivated models.
Required Qualifications:
PhD in Astrophysics or Physics with a strong background in cosmology, astrophysics, and data analysis. Applicants in all areas of astrophysics and cosmology are encouraged to apply. However, applicants with proven credentials in the following areas will be given particular attention:
Large data handling (Planck, radio, optical) and/or,
Extra-galactic backgrounds and dust extinction maps,
Physics of the Interstellar Medium,
Machine learning-based astronomical data analysis.
The appointee will carry out research in collaboration with the JPL advisor, resulting in publications in the open literature. Target start date: September 2024.

The postdoc will join the cosmology team at JPL in its effort to prepare for the scientific analysis of the Roman High Latitude Imaging Survey.
This survey is a large imaging survey dedicated to measuring the gravitational lensing signal over thousands of square degrees of high-quality imaging data. The position will involve but is not limited to contributing to the survey design, the shear measurement pipeline, and cross-correlation with other surveys. The postdoc will join a large international team recently selected to carry out this analysis. A joint appointment with the Euclid, and SuperBit team might be a possibility.
Required Qualifications:

The Diviner Lunar Radiometer Experiment is one of seven instruments aboard NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which launched on June 18, 2009. It is the first instrument to create detailed day and night surface temperature maps of the Moon. Data from Diviner has helped identify potential ice deposits in the polar regions, map compositional variations on the surface and derive subsurface temperatures. Since July of 2009, Diviner has operated continuously, acquiring nearly one trillion radiometric measurements to create the most detailed and complete set of thermal measurements of any planet in the solar system.
The postdoctoral research associate will work with the advisor to investigate the surface of the Moon. Specifically, they will use data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) Diviner Lunar Radiometer Experiment (Diviner) to constrain the thermophysical properties of the surface. Areas of particular interest include volcanism, and the breakdown of rocks and the evolution of regolith. Additionally, the postdoctoral researcher will supervise undergraduate interns. The interns will use LRO Camera (LROC) images to count boulders surrounding cold-spot craters to assess spatial variability in the subsurface rock content.
Qualifications:
Applicants with a PhD in planetary science, physics, geology, astronomy, or a related field are encouraged to apply. Candidates should have a strong background in physics. Experience with some or all of the following is helpful but not required:

The Earth Science Section at JPL seeks a postdoc researcher. The successful candidate will be a member of JPL’s Carbon Cycle and Ecosystems group which studies the role of ecosystems and the carbon cycle within the Earth System. Research in the group focuses on carbon cycle-climate interactions, impacts of climate on ecosystem structure, function, and composition, as well as on disturbance processes, such as wildfire. Members of the group study tropical drought effects, warming and changes in permafrost regions, land use change, effects of ocean climate variability on marine biology and biogeochemistry, terrestrial-marine interactions in the coastal zone, greenhouse gas emissions from cities and energy systems and the consequences of functional diversity for ecosystems on land and in the sea.
Project Description:
The reduction of greenhouse gases emissions is the principle mechanism to mitigate against climate change. The Paris agreement provides a framework for countries to assess and enhance their emission commitments through the Global Stocktake. However, these endeavors are occurring against a backdrop of climate change that is exerting pressure throughout the Earth System that is in turn challenging the ability of natural world to act as a buffer. In particular, extreme events amplified by natural variability and trends such as El Niños could push certain regions, e.g., the Amazon, into irreversible changes known as “tipping points”.
Understanding, quantifying, and predicting these impacts requires an interdisciplinary approach that can intellectually weave together carbon, water, and energy cycles informed by observations in conjunction with advanced modeling, data assimilation, and machine learning techniques.
To that end, we solicit here postdoc candidates to advance our understanding of greenhouse gases in the Earth System. The candidate will focus on the natural and anthropogenic components of the carbon cycle with a focus on its interaction within a perturbed Earth System.
The candidate will be advised at JPL as part of a larger NASA activity that promotes interdisciplinary Earth System Science using satellite observations with new data analytics platforms. Consequently, they will be expected to engage with other NASA disciplinary scientists working in the areas of fires, hydrology, atmospheric composition and ocean biogeochemistry. At JPL, they will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment that promotes collaboration with other researchers.
The appointee will be expected to publish scientific findings in top-tiered peer-reviewed scientific journals as well as presenting results in the related science team meetings, workshops, and conferences.
