The Machine Learning Department within the School of Computer Science is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate as part of the Simons Collaboration on Learning the Universe. We seek researchers with a PhD in machine learning or a related area who are enthusiastic about collaborating with colleagues in the physical sciences particularly physics, astrophysics, and cosmology.

The Simons collaboration is a large international effort spanning multiple institutes including researchers from CMU, Columbia University, Harvard University, Princeton University, Lawrence Berkeley National Labs, the Flatiron Institute and international partners from Canada, France, Germany, and Sweden. The postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to both lead their own projects as well as collaborate with larger teams and mentor students. The faculty hosts and primary mentors for the fellow will be Aarti Singh and Barnabas Poczos, and we will be working most closely with Shirley Ho from the Flatiron Institute.

Specific areas of technical research include deep learning, generative models, foundation AI models, physics informed ML models, uncertainty quantification, robustness, and transfer learning. Applicants are expected to have some prior experience in one or more of these research areas. The project will involve both the development of novel AI methodologies which leverage physical laws and constraints as well as their evaluation with physical simulations and real-world datasets. The project can also have a theoretical analysis aspect, but is not required, depending on the qualifications and interest of the applicant.

The Computing Facilities team is part of the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. We are currently seeking a Data Center Tech Lead to join our Operations team. 

Responsibilities include providing operational support for multiple data centers in the School of Computer Science.  Specific tasks include racking and connecting servers to power and network.  Power capacity planning at the rack and facility level.  Provisioning new racks and accompanying equipment based on available resources and standard baseline configurations. 

Individuals in this position will be part of a team providing round-the-clock service, multi- platform system backups, distributed printing, and audio-visual equipment support.

Responsibilities:

• Develop a power and cooling capacity plan for several small/medium sized data centers.
• Conduct audit of current power distribution/utilization down to the per-rack level for existing data center environment and document current state.
• Identify current norms and practices among staff working in data centers.  Implement changes to improve responsiveness, safety and reliability.
• Establish policies and procedures to assess risks and impact related to normal data center operations.  Implement monitoring and logging routines to ensure timely identification/resolution of problems.
• Collaborate with engineering/programming staff to implement load monitoring resources for power, cooling, and HPC workloads.
• Produce a proposal and project plan to transition existing data centers to a fully lights-out environment.
• Position racks, PDUs, and connectorized electrical circuits to support servers and associated equipment.
• Maintain records of circuit locations and utilization to be used in troubleshooting and capacity planning.  Assign circuits to new resources based on capacity and location.
• Monitor system and environmental status in a data center using an operational dashboard and take necessary action based on documented procedures.
• Maintain machine room layout records for machine and rack allocation.
• Document policies and procedures for safety protocols and standards for machine room work to be utilized by other Computing Facilities staff members.

Additional Tasks (team coverage - occasional):

• Take phone calls, answer basic computer questions, enter support tickets, and escalate to service owners where appropriate.
• Perform computer system backups, label and mount and file backup tapes.
• Provide support for printing equipment, replace paper, toner, and other supplies, and manage large format print jobs.
• Periodic checks of Audio-Visual equipment across multiple buildings.
• Log and record events during shift and report to supervisor.

The WebAssembly Research Center (WRC) at Carnegie Mellon University is looking to hire a full-time software engineer to build and support software that is key to the WRC’s mission. This includes designing and building new software as well as improving and maintaining software developed in research projects (e.g., by students). A key need is to create demos and tutorials of software tools as well as maintain such demos and tutorials and the underlying software. Other responsibilities include supporting software for the center, maintaining continuous integration, diagnosing, and fixing bugs, responding to issues filed by users, and generally improving the usability and robustness of WRC software tools. You will work directly with faculty, graduate students, and interns to help support research projects. You would also take ownership of appropriately transferable software artifacts. • Attend regular meetings and stay current with WRC research projects.
• Build, support, and maintain WRC software that fits specific research needs including polishing and improving research artifacts developed by students.

The Software and Societal Systems Department, in the School of Computer Science is looking to hire a nonpartisan policy analyst for the Center for Informed Democracy and Social-cybersecurity (IDeaS) at Carnegie Mellon University. Headquartered at Carnegie Mellon University, the Delphi research group was founded in 2012 to advance the theory and practice of epidemic forecasting. Our long-term mission is to make epidemic forecasting as widely accepted and useful as weather forecasting is today.

Delphi is in a critical growth phase. Pre-pandemic our focus was seasonal influenza; during the critical phase of the pandemic, we shifted our focus to COVID-19. Our signals are used regularly by public health officials, government agencies, data journalists, healthcare companies, financial firms, and fellow modelers.  We are a CDC-designated Center of Excellence (one of two nationally) as well as a Center of innovation (one of five nationally), and work closely with CDC COVID, forecasting, and flu teams. We now are setting our sights beyond COVID and influenza, developing the technology and building the infrastructure needed for tracking and forecasting any fast-moving epidemic that presents a significant burden to public health. 

As a crucial part of that mission, Delphi's data pipelines run daily to produce the nation's largest repository of diverse, geographically-detailed, real-time indicators of infectious disease activity in the U.S. Public health data systems are, at core, made out of people, and the errors that are normal, human, and rare at the individual facility level can rapidly accumulate at the national level to create frequent outages. 

We seek an addition to our data pipeline operations team who can leverage their skills in systems administration, programming, and data science to prevent, identify, diagnose, and rectify problems or outages that occur in our data processing pipelines. In this role, successful candidates will manage a new program for the training of educational technology entrepreneurs across Africa. This program consists of a number of components, including online courses, in-person and remote workshops, and mentoring support for hundreds of entrepreneurs in 8 countries who are participating in a startup technology accelerator in their country. The successful candidate will assist faculty in coordinating across these accelerators at a high level to assess accelerator and entrepreneur needs and aspirations. They will plan upcoming programming that meet these needs and aspirations, including managing travel opportunities for in-person events, aligning across program components by setting focus and guiding the direction of other team members, and tracking timelines and schedules to ensure that we are meeting our goals. They will additionally support evaluation and assessment of the program in order to drive improvement.

Excellent communication and organization skills are essential for this role as the candidate will be coordinating with accelerators, CMU staff, entrepreneurs, and the funder of the program. This should include the implementation and use of project management tools to facilitate the work of the whole team. Because the CMU team is small, this role also is likely to include project management responsibilities as well, depending on which program component may need support at any particular moment.
