The Registered Nurse (Outpatient Mental Health) position is located at The William V. Chappell, Jr., VA OPC, address, 551 National Health Care Drive. Daytona Beach, FL 32114.
The Registered Nurse (Outpatient Mental Health) is located under the Nursing, Mental health Service and will report directly to the Mental Health Nurse Manager or designee.
The Outpatient Mental Health Registered Nurse promotes proactive, integrated, comprehensive outpatient mental health care that is Veteran-centered, recovery-oriented, and evidence-based care with improved coordination and continuity of care. The OP MH RN is well versed and considered competent in mental health crisis management, holistic assessment of systems, interacting with patient families and significant others, substance abuse, suicidal and/or homicidal patients, homelessness, various mental health diagnoses (including but not limited to schizophrenia, bipolar, anxiety, depressive and personality disorders), PTSD exacerbation, multi-sexual trauma and other recognized mental health disorders.
The Registered Nurse (Outpatient Mental Health) provides care and counseling of persons to promote and maintain health and the prevention of illness and injury based upon the nursing process, which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as case finding, health teaching, health counseling, provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being, and executing medical regimens, including administering medications and treatments prescribed by a licensed or otherwise legally authorized provider. The nurse's primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or community. The staff nurse interprets the philosophy and goals of the Nursing Service to others in the work setting; functions within established guidelines and demonstrates the ability to work effectively and develop therapeutic relationships with patients, their families and other professional and supportive personnel who provide patient care.
Major duties and responsibilities for the Registered Nurse (Outpatient Mental Health) include, but are not limited to:
- Involved and participate in maintaining the patient's medical conditions that may be influencing the overall status.
- May act as care manager or Mental Health Treatment Coordinator.
- May initiate 1: 1 observations based on the patient's condition and/or cooperative nature.
- Acts as a consultant to other clinical services when inquiring on appropriate recommended treatment options.
- Documents records in the CPRS record and approved electronic data collection tools for trending and activity reporting.
- As a key member of the multidisciplinary team is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of thorough documentation.
- Communicates with intra-facility and at times inter-facility (i.e, Police agencies, other VAMCs and local hospitals) services and community agencies for effective handoff of the patient condition.
Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with workday/hours flexibility as patient care needs require.
