South West London Pathology (SWLP) are currently recruiting for a Biomedical Support Worker at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

However, the post holder may be required to work at any of the SWLP sites as and when necessary.

Following training, the post holder will be expected to participate in the 24/7 shift pattern, which may include working weekends and nights.

The Clincal Blood Sciences laboratory operate a 24/7 shift system, providing cover to busy A&E and acute services. Cellular Pathology, Immunology and Microbiology laboratories are based at St George’s Hospital.

The Biomedical Support Worker role includes:
• pre-analytical sample sorting/preparation
• data entry
• receipt and maintenance of stock
• attending to service user telephone queries
• health and safety responsibilities
• post-analytical procedures.

Although the post will not receive support in completing the IBMS Registration Portfolio, the role offers initial laboratory experience to candidates who wish to pursue a career in biomedical sciences. Full training will be provided.

The role will enable your continued development as a Clinical Scientist, build on your broad range of experience in Clinical Biochemistry and provide scientific input into both the core automated and the specialist laboratories of the Biochemistry department, including the South West Thames Newborn Blood Spot Screening services.

• To maintain accurate computerised and patient records on all patients with whom interventions take place including the management of the health adviser recall and partner notification systems.

Health Education
• To co-ordinate enquiries from other health professionals and the general public about iissues related to HIV.
• To co-ordinate the production, supply and display of HIV and relevant health promotion materials.

Professional Responsibilities
• To attend regular managerial, supervision and appraisal meetings.

Applicants must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and have post registration experience in a UKAS or IBMS accredited laboratory.

Our Cardiac Physiology team are looking to recruit a Band 6 Specialist Cardiac Physiologist looking to develop further in Cardiac Cath Labs and train in Cardiac Rhythm Management. The post holder will therefore be based in the CRM/Cath Lab/Non-invasive department at St. George's.

The post holder will be required to hold a BSc Cardiac Physiology/Healthcare Science (Cardiology) or AHCS Certificate of PTP Equivalence. In addition the post holder will need to undertake a full range of complex and routine invasive and non-invasive cardiac investigations, providing specialist input to the delivery of the clinical service and actively contributing to the smooth running of a quality service to patients.

Assessment service in accordance with local policies, protocol, and guidelines alongside the inter professional team.

The post holder should be aware of the role of Pre-operative assessment in the overall Trust need to provide high quality, efficient service of care that respects its patients and staff. Providing effective Preoperative assessment will deliver optimal surgical intervention, with benefits for patient and hospital.

Following training and competency assessments, will be responsible to assess the elective surgical patients’ fitness for anaesthetic and surgery. To identify patients’ health and ill-health, noting and organising specific action resulting from the assessment which may include requesting additional investigations; liaising across nursing, anaesthetic, medical and surgical divisions and ensuring the patient is kept informed at each step.

To support the Preoperative Assessment team (POA) through training of junior members of the team and actively assisting in the development of the policies and protocols relating to the department at all times, to work as an inter-professional member of the primary and secondary care team.

The post holder is independently responsibility for arranging an effective, appropriate assessment for a case load of elective surgical patients. They will obtain and record an accurate patient history, observations and complete a chest auscultation to determine normal / abnormal sounds to lungs and heart.

It is the responsibility of the POA assessor to request investigations and / or referral to specialist assistance such as anaesthetist, cardiology or cancer care in order to aid in decision making prior to the elective admission.

To provide and receive complex patient information in relation to investigations, relaying this in a manner that can be understood by patient.

Clinical Duties:

This clinical fellow appointment’s duties will involve daily assessment of the children, planning of treatment, organising and arranging investigations, and liaison with other departments and teams.

St Georges Hospital is a major teaching hospital in SW London. The Children’s service offers a wide range of acute general and specialist tertiary services and was recently rated as outstanding by the CQC. The acute general paediatrics team consists of 11 WTE consultant paediatricians, operating an attending system, with a team of ST trainees, clinical fellows and FY doctors. The entire paediatric department has over 35 consultants managing infectious diseases, haematology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, respiratory, neurology and surgical patients. St George’s paediatric department is a highly rated teaching and training centre with a diverse education programme.

Job Summary:

General Paediatrics:

This post will suit those wishing to gain substantial experience in a large, well supervised unit with a mixed general and subspecialist patient group. Training can be tailored to needs of the postholder but there are opportunities to experience emergency care, ambulatory care and care of complex children. Duties will involve daily assessment of the children, planning of treatment, organising and arranging investigations, and liaison with other departments and teams.

Paediatric Infectious Diseases/oncology:

You will be part of the ward team caring for all patients on Pinckney ward, the paediatric infectious diseases and oncology ward. Children admitted to Pinckney ward have a variety of infectious conditions such as tuberculosis, meningitis and HIV. You will also be involved in caring for patients with an oncological diagnosis who are admitted either for chemotherapy or febrile illness. You will have the opportunity to attend infectious diseases meeting, and attend specialty clinics.

Paediatric Surgery:

St George’s is the regional referral centre for children requiring paediatric surgery. Children are admitted electively for a range of procedures, many of these with co-morbid medical conditions and complex needs. Acutely children are also referred for emergency surgery from regional hospitals.

Paediatric Neurosciences:

St George’s is also a regional neurosurgical centre and hosts regional tertiary paediatric neurology. The teams work closely in the care of children with complex needs and provide a number of specialist treatments. St George’s is also a major trauma centre and provides care for children with the sequelae of major trauma. Duties will involve daily assessment of the children, participating in neurosurgical and neurology consultant led ward rounds, and working with the specialists to arrange investigations and treatment.

Paediatric Community Services:

The paediatric neurodevelopmental, neurodisability and epilepsy service is well established and offers a child-centred, consultant led service. It is part of the integrated child health department of St George’s Hospital and offers a comprehensive service for a wide range of neurodevelopmental problems (including ADHD and ASD), complex neurodisability, Down’s Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy. The ADHD Service is a specialist Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) service within the developmental paediatric team. The service supports parents and children through the assessment, diagnosis and management of ADHD. We take referrals of children under the age of 11 years old who are registered with a GP in the Borough of Wandsworth. We provide follow up care for children who are under our service, until they are old enough to transition to adult services.
