This position is in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) in Washington, DC. The mission of the S&T Directorate is to develop and deliver effective and sustainable technologies to enable and/or enhance new mission performance capabilities and to anticipate, prevent, mitigate and/or defeat threats against the Homeland Security Enterprise (HSE). The purpose of this position is to provide expert scientific, technical and engineering capabilities to support S&T’s efforts in anticipating new operational capabilities and threats introduced by generation-next, emerging technologies.
Typical assignments include:
- Leading, researching and sharing subject matter expertise in engineering, Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML), High Performance Computing, Parallel Computing, Cloud Computing, Systems Architecture, Natural Language Processing, Quantum Computing/Sensing/Networking, quantum physics, and related disciplines, mathematics, statistics, data analysis, computer science, and systems technology.
- Advancing knowledge in each domain through active participation and leadership on expert panels, committees, task forces and appropriate industry conferences.
- Engaging with Homeland Security Enterprise (HSE) components and mission areas, to develop an understanding of mission objectives and a capability inventory of people, infrastructure, methods critical to understand how and where existing and new technologies in data analysis and AI/ML, quantum, and data analytics could pose an opportunity to advance the DHS mission and/or present a threat when these technologies are used against the DHS Enterprise.
- Applying expert level mathematical and computational modeling to conceptualize, develop, configure, test, evaluate and validate models and tools to determine the veracity and usefulness towards practical scenarios, problems or solutions in support of mission applications.
- Leading scientific and/or innovative computational modeling and/or computational environment advancements such as technology development projects, performance demonstrations, performance verification assessments and/or performance validations for HSE application.
- Leading research and development projects involving high-performance computing environments, leveraging big data (text, video, images, speech), evaluating and applying advanced computing, storage, and analytics, and developing new security and privacy concepts.
- Leading research and technical assessments of programs, projects, tasks and initiatives to determine sufficiency of scientific and/or engineering rigor, advancement, risks and appropriateness of the progress towards meeting the define goals.
