The Registered Nurse delivers nursing care for patients in within the limits of the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Arkansas and adheres to institutional policies, procedures and standards. The RN is responsible for the following:
Adhere to the standard of care defined by UAMS, ANA, and Standards for specialty patient population with support and mentoring by other team members.
Collects and documents assessment data.
Develops a Plan of Care (POC) per standard. Implements POC including medical order and interdisciplinary approach.
Evaluates the progress of patient toward attainment of desired outcomes. Provides effective patient/family education/discharge planning.
Administers medication per standard including drug information to patients/families. Acts as a resource/supports others.

Key Responsibilities
Patient Education: Assesses learning needs and provides instruction to patients and families about diabetes management, documents in electronic record of instructions, attainment of learning goals, and collaboration with other multiple disciplinary healthcare providers. Contacts insurance carriers for information on the preferred medications, and testing supplies. Provides diabetes education for all staff as needed. Attains diabetes education supplies and testing supplies for our area. Creates diabetes education documents for patients and families, and staff as needed.
QI: Proficiency testing for hospital glucometers every 6 months. Collaborates with the POC coordinator in the lab. Orders the specimens and reports information to WSLH.
Communication/Collaboration: Implements education using an approach that is interdisciplinary with Patient and Family Centered Care and other health care providers. Effectively collaborates and communicates with the multidisciplinary team at all levels. Communicates care appropriately through documentation in the medical record and internal department record keeping. Works on committees involved in improvement of diabetes care in the hospital. Updates or creates diabetes-related protocols as needed. Mentor's students in health-related fields as needed.
Customer Service: Interacts with, and assists, the public in a professional and friendly manner as needed. Demonstrates effective communication skills; communicates accurate and complete information; maintains strict confidentiality when necessary.
