- Provides scientific leadership of interdisciplinary research teams on regional, national, and international research.
- Develops a mechanistic understanding of watershed ecosystem function by studying how abiotic and biotic factors regulate carbon, nutrient, and water cycling processes.
- Provides science and strategic leadership for the research work unit, explores new areas of research for the work unit, and obtains funding to support the research program.
- Initiates collaborative research; negotiates grants and cooperative agreements; monitors study progress; approves final reports; participates in data analyses, interpretation, and manuscript writing; and oversees publication of research results.
- Leads scientific investigations quantifying the effects of observed and anticipated climatic shifts on forests, forest management, landscape change, and ecosystem services.
- Elucidates ecophysiological mechanisms and controls on carbon and water cycling in managed and unmanaged forest ecosystems at multiple scales.
- Develops and tests novel approaches that quantify the ecological and economic impacts of observed and projected climate shifts on forests and the ecosystem services they provide.
- Supervisory duties are 25% or more of this position. Provides technical and administrative supervision to employees in a variety of professional and non-professional occupations
