Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for Research Assistant in the Department of Clinical Imaging Research Centre (CIRC) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. CIRC is a dedicated molecular imaging research centre. It is equipped with on-site capability for the preparation of diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals in a modern GMP-certified facility. CIRC is positioned to support both academic and commercially led clinical research programs, with dedicated clinical imaging facilities area advanced modalities of PET-CT and PET-MRI. Purpose of the post

The Research Assistant will be responsible for the routine production of radiopharmaceuticals in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). The successful candidate will also assist in the method development and validation of new radiopharmaceuticals, including the preparation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and other quality related documentation. Other tasks may be assigned as per business needs which may include routine QC analysis of the product as per established procedures.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Research Assistant will be able to:

• Perform routine preparation of radiopharmaceuticals as per protocols and current GMP regulations.
• Develop and optimize radiochemistry procedures and processes.
• Perform basic maintenance/troubleshooting of automated synthesis modules, hot cells and other lab equipment.
• Safe handling of radioactive materials and disposal of hazardous waste according to University regulations.
• Perform environmental monitoring as required by PIC/S GMP in the cleanrooms (environmental monitoring, airborne particle monitoring).
• Assist in writing Standard Operating Procedures, Work Instructions, Record sheets and other quality related documentation.
• Maintain consumable inventories and re-ordering of stock as necessary.
• Perform QC processes (HPLC, GC, TLC etc) according to procedures to ensure the product is safe for clinical use.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Manage routine microbial tests such as microbial plate incubation, sterility testing, bioburden testing, etc and liaising with third party contractors if required.
• Maintain cleanliness in the QC laboratory and the cyclotron facility.
• Other adhoc duties may also be assigned as required by department.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Personnel should be comfortable with:

• Exposure to radiation when handling radioactive samples.

• Handling of chemicals for QC testing (flammables, acids, and bases).

Qualifications

The applicant should:

1. Have a minimum of BSc degree in Chemistry (Synthetic Organic/Inorganic/Medical), Biochemistry, Pharmacy or a related science field.
2. Experience in production, manufacturing or handling of PET drug products preferred.
3. Good knowledge and experience of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) or GLP (Good Laboratory Practice).
4. Practical experience in general wet laboratory techniques, such as analytical balance operations, pipetting, pH measurement and reagents preparation.
5. Preferably hands-on experience with operating and maintaining analytical instruments such as HPLC, GC, TLC.
6. Basic understanding of relevant safety regulations and protocols for handling/disposal of radioactive materials.
7. Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to communicate professionally with colleagues and customers.
8. Proven ability to work independently with minimum supervision as well as a constructive team player.

Job Overview

Perform monitoring and site management work to ensure that sites are conducting the study(ies) and reporting study data as required by the study protocol, applicable regulations and guidelines, and sponsor requirements.

Essential Functions

• Perform site monitoring visits (selection, initiation, monitoring and close-out visits) in accordance with contracted scope of work and regulatory requirements, i.e., Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) guidelines

• Work with sites to adapt, drive, and track subject recruitment plan in line with project needs to enhance predictability.

• Administer protocol and related study training to assigned sites and establish regular lines of communication with sites to manage ongoing project expectations and issues.

• Evaluate the quality and integrity of study site practices related to the proper conduct of the protocol and adherence to applicable regulations. Escalate quality issues as appropriate.

• Manage the progress of assigned studies by tracking regulatory submissions and approvals, recruitment and enrollment, case report form (CRF) completion and submission, and data query generation and resolution. May support start-up phase.

• Ensure copies/originals (as required) site documents are available for filing in the Trial Master File (TMF) and verify that the Investigator's Site File (ISF) is maintained in accordance with GCP and local regulatory requirements.

• Create and maintain appropriate documentation regarding site management, monitoring visit findings and action plans by submitting regular visit reports, generating follow-up letters and other required study documentation.

• Collaborate and liaise with study team members for project execution support as appropriate.

In this role you will be taught the intricacies of clinical trials regulations and the requirements for successful execution of a clinical trial from start up to closing. Other responsibilities can include document preparation, pre-screening patients for eligibility and outreach events.

The majority of the work will be onsite/in-person, with limited work from home opportunity. This position is located at Banner Sun Health Research Institute in Sun City, Arizona. Typical work schedule is M-F 8:00am – 04:30pm, however there is flexibility as needed.

POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for performing patient registrations, as well as compiling and submitting data related to patients engaged in applicable research studies. Monitors study compliance and maintains a system for effective data flow associated with research protocols.

CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Maintains current and accurate protocol documentation and notifies appropriate individuals of pertinent protocol changes. Identifies and communicates important protocol and data management issues to appropriate individuals.

2. Verifies that patients have completed appropriate registration materials and maintains related records and information.

3. Instructs volunteers on protocol requirements and explains procedures and consent forms. Ensures related documentation is properly completed.

4. Ensures protocol compliance with intense monitoring of specific study requirements and schedules protocol related treatment and tests. Performs specific clinical duties as required per the research study.

5. Assists in ordering and maintaining research supplies as directed.

6. Prepares and maintains a variety of documentation in assigned area of responsibility.

7. May serve as a backup, collecting and delivering specimens for analysis using appropriate or specified equipment. Ensures proper labeling and obtains pertinent clinical and protocol information on request forms.

8. Department level responsibility. Some positions may have frequent interaction with patients, families, visitors, physicians, and related clinical departments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.

Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures as normally obtained through the completion of two years experience in a health care setting, preferably in a research environment. Must have knowledge and understanding of medical terminology in order to read, identify, and extract pertinent data from medical records and information. Must be able to multi-task and re-prioritize duties as needed. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Excellent human relations, organizational and communication skills are required.

Must be knowledgeable of data entry and computer programs associated with maintaining databases, spreadsheets, etc.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Associate’s Degree or Certified Research Assistant Certification preferred.

Description

1. Responsible for overseeing all aspects of the day-to-day management of assigned projects. Serves as the primary administrative liaison between study participant and Principal Investigator or other research staff. Coordinates project activities, scheduling, and outreach. Attends or facilitates meetings and other communications with investigators, research sponsors, other research staff and investigator staff members for the purposes of coordination of services to support assigned research projects.

2. Performs implementation/active and close-out phases of the study and recruitment of study participants by implementing effective screening strategies. Schedules and performs initial contact with prospective research subjects and follow-up visits; understands and explains research protocol, consent forms and when applicable uses detailed questionnaires and/or assessments to collect data for research studies; monitors the information for eligibility for the specific protocol as well as accuracy and completeness prior to examination by the investigators and/or sponsoring agency.

3.  Collects, codes and enters study information into a database; assists in data compilation. Documents and maintains accurate records and study information. Prepares reports and summaries as needed. Manages financial records for dissemination and reconciliation of participant incentives (i.e., Visa gift cards and/or other non-monetary gifts).

4.  Interviews project participants individually or in groups. Interviews may be conducted in person, by telephone, via televideo, or by mail. Ensures that completed questionnaires are complete, legible and accurate in accordance with research protocols.  Make follow-up contact with participants to obtain missing or questionable data.

5. Spearheads lab recruitment efforts as needed and coordinates the scheduling of required laboratory tests and/or exams when applicable. Process samples for shipping, and perform any other procedures specific to study protocols (willing to learn phlebotomy for the collection of blood samples as well as other biological or environmental samples, as well as collection of vital signs if needed); Operates and maintains clinical research laboratory equipment to ensure safety and provide accurate results.

6.  Develops, monitors, and adheres to timelines for project goals. Ensures that deadlines and deliverables to relevant funding agencies are met. Assist Clinical Research Supervisor and PI in complying with all state and federal regulatory and institutional requirements.

7. Maintains complete and accurate records and files pertaining to one or more research studies including regulatory and financials (study supplies, equipment, research participant incentives, travel, etc.).  Maintain detailed records of research subject visits and procedures. 

8. Makes descriptive reports of research study progress and outcomes. Makes recommendations to investigators to improve research processes and outcomes. Assists in preparation and submission of adverse events, protocol deviations or variations and data reports as needed. Responds to internal and external regulatory and financial audits.
