Academic duties The Welsh Centre for Emergency Medicine Research offers exposure to a full range of research activities. The Centre undertakes quite detailed laboratory based work in the form of preclinical modelling, and a large range of both clinical and epidemiological studies. Although the candidate will be exposed to a wide range of research activities, the candidate will be encouraged to focus on an area or study of their choice. This role will give the candidate the opportunity to gain a wider understanding of research methodology and trial design (i.e. statistical design, hypothesis generating concepts). There is also the opportunity for those who are interested to undertake training in laboratory based research in clinically related studies (i.e. preclinical modelling of disease and treatment evaluation). Clinical duties This job will provide the candidate with the opportunity to consolidate pre-existing Emergency Medicine experience and develop a clinical portfolio for future applications in Emergency Medicine or their chosen specialty. The job will involve the prompt assessment and treatment of undifferentiated patients in all areas within the emergency department. The successful candidates will initially join the full shift 20 slot junior rota working 50% of a clinical slot with the remaining 50% time dedicated to research activities. Current full slot averages approximately 45 hours per week with 2:4 weekends. Suitable candidates can progress within the department to middle grade rota if desired. There is a weekly teaching programme the candidate will attend which will explore topics around the RCEM portfolio. There will also be the opportunity to access regional and national educational events as appropriate for the individuals learning needs. You will be allocated a dedicated educational and academic supervisor to help plan for your future development. The post holder will work under the direct supervision of one clinical academic and KNLs education lead (Ahilan Kailaya-Vasan). The post includes opportunities to study towards higher degrees and would suit individuals interested in pursuing an academic or a clinical career with an academic interest. This is a 12-month fixed term clinical academic post. The post holder will work as a Trust grade SHO and will include clinical and research duties, including 2 months of dedicated research time. Clinical duties will include inpatient care and out-of-hours on call duties. The post holder will gain experience in applied translational research and will work closely with clinical research coordinators, research clinicians, scientists and engineers. Academic responsibilities include primary benchside research, running clinical trials, applying for research grants and completing a relevant systematic review. The post holder must complete Good Clinical Practice training prior to commencing the post. To work according to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and research governance standards for clinical research studies To provide an effective quality data management service to any Partner Organisation within the Clinical Research Network West Midlands (CRN WM). To act as a resource and role model for junior staff and the wider multidisciplinary team. To identify and work within Standard Operating procedures (SOPs) in accordance with individual study site requirements. Acting as patient and participant advocate at all times, the post holder will be expected to organise study related care for a range of clinical research facility studies. They will identify strategies to find and assist in the enrolment of research participants. The post-holder will perform a range of clinical assessments in line with accepted standards of practice and perform basic laboratory techniques. They will communicate effectively with the study and clinical teams to ensure good participant experience and adherence to study protocols. The post holder will be responsible for case report form completion, site file management and maintenance of databases. They will be responsible for ordering study supplies.
