The John D. Dingell Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) is seeking a transformative and visionary leader for the Associate Chief of Staff for Primary Care Service (ACOS Primary Care), reporting directly to the Chief of Staff. In addition to Primary Care at the Medical Center, the ACOS Primary Care will also oversee the clinical care provided at the Women's Health Clinic, and off-site primary care locations. Primary Care also manages the whole health program, offering alternative medicine practices to supplement and enhance patients' medical treatment plans. Applicants must be US citizens, have an M.D. or D.O. degree, possess American Board Certification in the area of medical specialty (Primary Care, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine), have demonstrated administrative and leadership experience (ideally as Service Chief or Department Chair), and possess the necessary research and educational accomplishments to qualify for an academic appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level at our physically adjacent affiliate, Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSU-SOM).
The candidate should be an inspiring and effective role model, innovative thinker, customer-service focused, and have proven clinical excellence, with exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. The ability to motivate, develop, and monitor medical staff as part of multidisciplinary teams and service lines to achieve quality outcomes, optimize clinic capacity and utilization of resources, and maximize efficiency to meet required performance measures is essential. The ACOS Primary Care will be expected to practice within their specialty, foster a supportive teaching environment, and develop research programs. The VAMC serves as a major WSU-SOM site for pre-and post-graduate education in medicine, surgery, and psychiatry. A growing basic and clinical research program now exceeds $8 million in annual funding.
This VAMC is a state-of-the-art, 108-bed tertiary care, medical, surgical, and psychiatric facility with an 84-bed nursing home care unit, a 50-bed, off-site Domiciliary, and three community-based outpatient clinics. Over 2,000 employees provide dedicated service to Veterans from throughout southeastern Michigan. We are in the heart of Detroit's cultural and medical center districts that include museums, seven hospitals, and Wayne State University.

Administrative / Supervisory
1. Coordinates the professional and clinical aspects of the Pharmaceutical Care program.
2. Assures continued accreditation of the Pharmacy Practice Residency.
3. Promotes staff participation in the maintenance and review of Patient Medication Records, Laboratory Tests, Patient Medication Interviews, Chart Reviews, Grand Rounds, Clinical Huddles, and Continuing Education Programs.
4. Develops new clinical programs, the maintenance of appropriate quality patient care and in providing quality assurance assessments and medication usage evaluation, through performance improvement quality assurance programs.
5. Participates as a member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
6. Coordinates activities of the CPPs and supervisors reporting to him/her to organize work to maximize the productivity within available resources.
7. Recruits, interviews, and selects suitable personnel.
8. Provides direct supervision and evaluation to Clinical Pharmacy Practitioners, which participate in clinical pharmacy functions.
9. Institutes policy and procedures to assure high quality clinical, consultative and informational services are provided by pharmacy clinical staff.
10. Works with other services to complete goals and improve communications.
11. Coordinates development of staff competencies and ensures maintenance of employee competency folders for those under his or her supervision.
12. Maintains effective channels of communications focused on customer service and consistent with VA ICARE values with internal and external pharmacy customers.
13. Coordinates gathering and consolidation of required recurring and special reports and the development of monitors for continuous quality improvement of medication management processes.
14. Assists the Chief of Pharmacy in the preparation of a budget which projects and justifies personnel, equipment, and space for pharmacy clinical services.
15. Assures that the clinical pharmacy services are maintained at a quality consistent with current and accepted healthcare delivery standards.
16. Ensures Pharmacy Service compliance with CPPO, VHA, OIG, CARF and other applicable regulatory bodies.
17. Participates as a preceptor of pharmacy students and residents for education pertaining to administrative or clinical pharmacy services. Supervises the Residency Program Director.
Clinical - Direct Patient Care Activities that require a scope of practice
1. Core functions include face-to-face, video visit, and telephone encounters with referred patients, for comprehensive medication management in practice areas identified in their individual scope of practice.
2. Functions as a provider with a scope of practice to design, implement, and monitor therapeutic drug plans to achieve definite outcomes through direct interactions with patients and providers in assigned areas.
3. Orders, performs, reviews, and analyzes appropriate laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies necessary to monitor and support the patient's drug therapy.
4. Follows-up with patients on lab or test results to discuss the plan of therapy.
5. Clinical pharmacy specialists will determine if a referral to the physician is necessary when disease progression occurs or adverse drug events require treatment interventions outside of the CPP scope of practice.
Clinical - Indirect Patient Care Activities
1. Identify patients who may benefit from Comprehensive Medication Management through population management reports and during team meetings.
2. Review patient medication regimens for clinical effectiveness, drug selection, dosing, contraindications, side effects, potential drug interactions, and therapeutic outcomes as required. Communicates findings with prescribers and provides appropriate alternatives to current treatment plans as needed.
3. Monitor and report drug errors, adverse drug reactions, allergies, and patient compliance issues. Documents findings per facility procedures.
4. Apply knowledge of normal laboratory values in the evaluation of patient care, recognizes significant abnormalities, and makes dose adjustment recommendations based on objective laboratory findings.
5. Reviews and evaluates requests for non-formulary and restricted drugs for appropriateness and compliance with established criteria where applicable.
6. Assists Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee with Medication Use Evaluations (MUEs) and other safety initiatives.
7. Promotes and monitors compliance for established drug therapy policies.
8. Works with providers to ensure compliance with national, VISN, and local initiatives.
